A passion from childhood

A passion from childhood

From young I found myself enjoying making and creating. To speak of a few memories wether that be building bird boxes and using a traditional pole lathe with my grandad or creating lanters for the annual village event I grew up in or growing up in multiple house renovations it was an obvious path to take to the career I have taken.

In school 'resistant materials' quickly became my favourite class and that passion lead to gaining an A in my GCSE's for the subject. After leaving school I went straight on to being an apprentice in joinery which would see me learning my craft in windows, doors, stairs and furniture making and gaining a distinction in all 3 levels of my advanced craft award. After 7 years of working for the company sadly it had closed so it was time to move on from my role I ended up in as lead installer.

Upon leaving my job I would go on to do carpentry for a few years, In that time I found myself visiting France for a few months where I was to ignite a dream of having my own workshop after having to make cupboard doors and stair parts on site. Upon my arrival back to the UK I took to a good friends double garage to start producing one off windows and doors in-between kitchen fitting for a local company. SJ Carpentry & Joinery then evolved to SJ Joinery as the joinery side got busier

With my time being spent more at an office desk rather than making desks I decided to relocate my workshop nearer to my home and become a sole worker again. I am now a one man band with some amazing machinery and a honed skill in woodwork with some very knowledgable and skilled contacts in order to execute jobs to a high standard to fulfil my passion and my clients needs.

Finding the double garage was getting too small for the projects and my desires of having more machines, which I was finding to be a passion in itself. I moved into an industrial unit, for the next 8 years I would see my arsenal of machines and skills grow and be upgraded. The business now called 'Braunton Joinery' also grew as I took on my own apprentice as well as an employee. I would see myself become more office based and commuting from my self renovated cob cottage towards Winkleigh.
